During Cyberweek, Sea Change Simulations will present version 0.9.9 of the USIP OSP - the world's only open source platform to allow anyone to quickly create, conduct, refine and share online training simulations. This tool has been used to prepare peacebuilders for dangerous assignments, and in the classroom to allow students to engage in, and to create simulations.

During the week a representative of Sea Change Simulations will be online nearly 100% of the time and will be available to answer questions and provide technical support to anyone testing the platform out. Participants will be able to work on authoring simulations and a small group who registers early will be able to participate in a game using the platform. In addition, just before the conerence begins, Sea Change Simulations will release the following:

Here are some videos describing the Sea Change Simulations application and some instructions for using it.

Feedback received during the conference will be incorporated into the 1.0 release of the software. This is a powerful opportunity for members of the community to help shape a tool that will become increasingly invaluable to them. The 1.0 release will be released shortly after the meeting along with a contest to design the best simulation to teach online negotiation. Details on the contest and on the next release will be provided during the event.

Formerly a Senior Program Officer at the USIP, his personal mission is life is to make simulation technology accessible to everyone. He strongly believes that if the human race is to survive we need to make our mistakes in virtual worlds, and to also develop the empathy and holistic perspectives that only come from either hard experience, or from participating in and creating simulations. Cole has extensive experience in the field of simulation, both in content and technology. He has developed simulations of molecular dynamics, business decision-making processes and for peacebuilders in complicated and complex environments. He is a Sun-certified enterprise architect, programmer and developer, and Oracle-certified database associate. He was a nuclear reactor operator in the U.S. Navy, has worked for a number of private-sector firms (including Arthur Andersen) and has teaching experience. He has a B.S. in biophysics from the University of Connecticut (summa cum laude), a master’s in biophysics and computational biology from the University of Illinois and a master’s in global management from the University of Phoenix.

The new Online Dispute Resolution Working Group convened by Uncitral represents a major opportunity to move forward on the creation of a cross-border system for providing redress in Internet E-commerce disputes. For the first time in the history of alternative dispute resolution, there is a transparent, public dialogue with representatives from every major country aimed squarely at the creation of a world-wide dispute resolution system. This is unquestionably an exciting opportunity. Come discuss the progress of the Working Group with some of the people making it happen: John Singer from the US Federal Trade Commission, Vikki Rogers from the Institute of International Commercial Law, and Colin Rule of Modria.com.

In this presentation, Dr. Ernest Thiessen will first explain how Smartsettle Infinity uses Visual Blind Bidding to help negotiators achieve the fairness objective and then applies optimization with an algorithm called "maximize the minimum gain" to make sure that there is no value left on the table. The presentation will be concluded with a demonstration of Infinity showing a simulation of a negotiation between Jenny and Joey who are fighting over a single orange. After seeing how Infinity could be used to solve this very simple problem, you will be able to imagine how this powerful eNegotiation system is able to produce tremendous benefits through time savings and uncovered value in any complex negotiation with any number of quantitative or qualitative issues between any number of decision makers.

As mediation gained in popularity it made sense that it would expand to the family law arena. It made so much sense that many states made mediation mandatory for parents wanting a divorce and a court ordered parenting plan laying out how parents would parent their children in the future. The 1980’s was a time of growing concern for the needs of victims of domestic violence and growing awareness of the potential for the mediation process to produce false agreements when domestic abuse was a factor. When domestic abuse dynamics were invisibly operating under the surface, bad agreements were often created. Mediators who were not aware, educated and sensitive to the power and control dynamics of domestic abuse contributed to the creation of these fake agreements in the early court mandated mediation session when both parents were required to be present in the same room at the same time. As a result of new insights in the 1980’s and early 1990’s into domestic abuse dynamics many states prohibited mediation where domestic violence issues were present. Screening for domestic violence began and victims were banned from mediation. This discussion will be about victims of domestic abuse having a mediation option in crafting a parenting plan and how ODR can play an important role looking at the specialized alternative dispute resolution process set out in the 2007 amended Nebraska Parenting Act as an example.
