The McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies of the University of Massachusetts-Boston, FLACSO-Ecuador, and the Center for Mediation, Peace, and Resolution of Conflict (CEMPROC) are pleased to announce:

The 3rd annual Summer Institute on Conflict Transformation Across Borders will take place from June 26-July 14, 2017 in Quito, Ecuador at FLACSO, with graduate-level credit issued by UMass Boston. The program will focus on conflict and peace in border regions, including immigration and refugee-related conflict. More info and application instructions are available at http://www.caps.umb.edu/conflict_transformation. The application deadline is April 1, 2017.

This 3-minute video is a great way to get a quick feel for the program: https://youtu.be/pubS4Jf7D80

The program will feature a series of high-level guest speakers (past years have included a former Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Relations, former ambassadors, UNHCR officials, ambassadors to UNASUR, UN peacekeeper involved in the Nicaraguan demobilization process, military officers in the border region, refugee leaders, NGO activists, and more).

This course is designed to equip early-career professionals, graduate and advanced undergraduate students, and other future peacebuilders with practical tools, knowledge, and hands-on experience to understand the complexities of conflicts in refugee communities and across border regions, and the types of interventions that can be used to transform these conflicts.

The program will include classroom learning; trips to the Amazon cloud forest and the northern border region; practical skills training workshops on conflict analysis, negotiation, cross-cultural communication, and proposal writing; and participants will design their own proposal for a peacebuilding project, receiving feedback from a panel of experienced experts in the field. In this sense, the Summer Institute is not just a learning or training opportunity, but a platform for action that connects a cohort of future peacebuilders and empowers them to address the complex conflicts related to borders, migration and refugees, and transnational environmental challenges that face the world today.

More details and applications are available online at http://www.umb.edu/academics/caps/international/conflict_transformation (the deadline to apply is April 1, 2017).
The conventional wisdom about conflict resolution international education assumes that students must choose between short term “island” study abroad programs that are accessible but have only superficial impact, and longer immersion programs, which gave greater impact but higher costs and barriers to participation. This article argues that well-designed study abroad programs can combine the best of both models to achieve significant impact even in a short program. It proposes a “bridge model” for reconceptualizing study abroad not as a discrete event with more or less impact on student learning, but as a key intervention that furthers a student’s overall development within an internationalized curriculum. The article examines the case of an international peacebuilding study abroad program in Ecuador. It measures alumni perceptions of impact, objective outcomes, and alumni network development, based on a survey of past participants from four years of the program, as well as qualitative interviews. The key finding is that solid program design and structured cross-cultural interaction (particularly through the participation of local students throughout the program) produces the type of long-term effect and networks traditionally associated with immersion programs. Greater post-program networking is also associated with greater perceived program impact.

About Move This World: Move This World is a global nonprofit that uses creative movement as a vehicle to transform conflict, violence and bullying in communities. Recognizing that an individual in motion can ignite a global movement, MTW focuses specifically on empowering citizens with the social and emotional skills needed to create peace within themselves, in their interactions, and in their communities. Our hallmark program is an innovative, evidence-informed curriculum that engages students Pre-K-12 in movement-based activities that promote empathy, mediation skills, diversity appreciation, anger management, and conflict transformation. Through partnerships with schools, community centers, and families, Move This World is building and connecting more peaceful communities in the United States in Baltimore, Newark, New York City and Washington DC and internationally in Colombia, Germany, and the Philippines. To date, Move This World has worked with over 8,500 individuals across 22 cities on four continents. Our vision is to ignite global social change through the art of movement.

We are Ashoka Activating Empathy Award winners, a Global Shaper with the World Economic Forum, a Youth Leader with the Inter-American Development Bank and Beyond Sport Award Finalists. We are building a network of intercultural exchange in peacebuilding and violence prevention through creative movement. We envision a world where creative movement redefines how we build cultures of empathy, teach and learn.
