In this webinar, which is hosted by Virtual Mediation Lab and sponsored by the Association for Conflict Resolution International Section, Suzanne Ghais overviews her research exploring how inclusion or exclusion of civil society affected peace processes in Liberia, Chad, and the Philippines. In these cases, civil society, when included, pressed for addressing underlying sources of conflict and helped build public support for the peace. Dr. Ghais will discuss the practical implications for peacebuilders in fragile and post-conflict societies, such as the many different ways civil society can contribute to a peace process, what to do where civil society is not well developed, and ways to support grassroots organizations in promoting peace.

Suzanne Ghais is principal at Ghais Mediation and Facilitation and an adjunct instructor at American University’s School of International Service. She recently completed her Ph.D. in international relations at American University (AU) with a focus on peace processes. She teaches two courses “Conflict Assessment and Prevention” and “International Negotiation” through AU’s online master’s program in international relations.
The McCormack Graduate School of Policy and Global Studies of the University of Massachusetts-Boston, FLACSO-Ecuador, and the Center for Mediation, Peace, and Resolution of Conflict (CEMPROC) are pleased to announce:

The 3rd annual Summer Institute on Conflict Transformation Across Borders will take place from June 26-July 14, 2017 in Quito, Ecuador at FLACSO, with graduate-level credit issued by UMass Boston. The program will focus on conflict and peace in border regions, including immigration and refugee-related conflict. More info and application instructions are available at http://www.caps.umb.edu/conflict_transformation. The application deadline is April 1, 2017.

This 3-minute video is a great way to get a quick feel for the program: https://youtu.be/pubS4Jf7D80

The program will feature a series of high-level guest speakers (past years have included a former Ecuadorian Minister of Foreign Relations, former ambassadors, UNHCR officials, ambassadors to UNASUR, UN peacekeeper involved in the Nicaraguan demobilization process, military officers in the border region, refugee leaders, NGO activists, and more).

This course is designed to equip early-career professionals, graduate and advanced undergraduate students, and other future peacebuilders with practical tools, knowledge, and hands-on experience to understand the complexities of conflicts in refugee communities and across border regions, and the types of interventions that can be used to transform these conflicts.

The program will include classroom learning; trips to the Amazon cloud forest and the northern border region; practical skills training workshops on conflict analysis, negotiation, cross-cultural communication, and proposal writing; and participants will design their own proposal for a peacebuilding project, receiving feedback from a panel of experienced experts in the field. In this sense, the Summer Institute is not just a learning or training opportunity, but a platform for action that connects a cohort of future peacebuilders and empowers them to address the complex conflicts related to borders, migration and refugees, and transnational environmental challenges that face the world today.

More details and applications are available online at http://www.umb.edu/academics/caps/international/conflict_transformation (the deadline to apply is April 1, 2017).
Online mediation can no doubt be useful and cost-effective for resolving cross-border disputes, when parties live in different countries or continents, and probably speak different languages.

Sure, the technology for running such online mediations is already available and works well. On our website, for example, you can find video recordings of simulations we ran 2-3 years ago in 9 languages: English, French, Spanish, German, Italian, Greek, Thai, Romanian, and Polish - http://goo.gl/Jh44h

(Please Note. We no longer use Skype for our simulations; instead, we prefer using a video collaboration software called Zoom).

Besides technology, however, there are many other (and more important) factors to keep in mind when mediating online cross-border, bi-lingual disputes.

On our website we discuss three of those factors:

>> Mediation takes more time
>> Parties’ different cultures
>> Mediator’s different “hats”

And we also explain why, although, we believe that online mediation of International disputes offers great opportunities, we are also aware that we are dealing with a new, uncharted territory, which we plan to discover by trial and error – i.e. by experimenting through simulations, and finding out what works well or not-so-well.

For this reason, we welcome the collaboration with mediation centers and ADR organizations that are interested in this topic - http://goo.gl/L1jtay
A House Divided Cannot Standtag:www.adrhub.com,2015-06-03:4905899:Topic:660622015-06-03T17:17:53.271ZConflict Resolution at UMasshttp://www.adrhub.com/profile/LeighMurphy

Too often, we roll our eyes at pundits on television talking past one another about a pressing political issue. And then we move on, frustrated but ultimately resigned to the stagnation, paralysis, and silos in our political climate. We tune out, polarization worsens, and the cycle repeats.

To shift the culture of civic discourse, we need to build bridges. We need a conversation that doesn’t start and end with red or blue. And we can’t do it alone. Only together can we shift towards political narratives that value people over positions, and allow for more constructive communication across difference. Join us!

Public Conversations Project is part of a partnership convening Boston's first Transpartisan Conference on June 20th at the UMass Boston campus. The budding Transpartisan movement brings together community and business leaders across sectors and political lines to cultivate a vibrant, creative political spectrum that is capable of wise, sustainable decision-making.

Delivered by the ADR GROUP faculty, Rahim Shamji and Tom Valenti, and Giuseppe Leone of Virtual Mediation Lab - http://goo.gl/dnc0Y - that pilot program was a great success. As a result, ADR Group has just announced the first International Online Mediation Training Course (IOM).

It is designed for already qualified mediators from around the world, who have completed a minimum 40 hour training course with a competent mediation training organization. The IOM training will take place from Monday, May 18 to Friday, May 22, 2015 and is set out as 12 hours of training — a 1 1/2 hour opening session to learn the techniques, followed by three 3-hour online mediation simulations, in groups of three, followed by a 1 1/2 hour feedback/wrap-up session. There are two trainers in the first and last sessions, and one during the simulations.

Upon successful completion of the IOM course, participants will earn the title "Accredited Online Dispute Resolution Mediator", and will have the opportunity to undertake advanced training courses with Virtual Mediation Lab on a one to one basis.
