Conflict Intervention Service (CIS) https://goo.gl/YBwTq8 is a grant funded project of the City and County of San Francisco in partnership with The Bar Association of San Francisco’s Bay Area Mediation Services Program. This innovative program utilizes skilled mediators with diverse backgrounds in landlord-tenant law, psychology, addiction, mental health and housing conflict to resolve disputes in affordable housing that can lead to eviction or homelessness.

On November 2, 2017 a group of those mediators participated in a Virtual Mediation Lab Hands-on Training in Online Mediation, which consisted of 2 parts:

>> Part 1 – 60-min Introduction to Online Mediation (What online mediation means and how It works; how we (mediators) can do online everything we are used to do face-to-face; how to blend face-to-face and online mediation; which cases are suitable for online mediation; online mediation benefits; which video collaboration software works best for online mediation.

>> Part 2 – 90-min Hands-on Online Mediation via Zoom (Each mediator practiced what they learned during Part 1)

At the end of the training, I asked all mediators a simple question: “Has this 150-min hands-on training changed your view of online mediation?” Here are some of their answers:

“Now I am not afraid of it”
“I am eager to do it”
“I am marveling at the capabilities of this software (Zoom). It’s incredible.”
“I’m excited at the way people perceive technology and their relationship with technology. Online mediation may add an edge to mediation”.
“This is extraordinary”
“It opens up a whole new world!”

This experience seems to show that a good way to respond to many experienced mediators’ initial (and natural) skepticism about online mediation is to let them try it and judge by themselves.

Giuseppe Leone, founder of Virtual Mediation Lab, a project sponsored by the Association for Conflict Resolution Hawaii Chapter, believes that online mediation offers two important benefits.

Giuseppe Leone, founder of Virtual Mediation Lab, a project sponsored by the Association for Conflict Resolution Hawaii Chapter, believes that online mediation offers two important benefits.

First, it can be very useful for resolving disputes when parties:

>> Have a mobile device: e.g. Ipad, iPhone, Android tablet or smartphone
>> Want or need to settle their dispute as soon as possible, with the assistance of a neutral mediator
>> Cannot afford an in-person mediation

Second, given that most people already have and use regularly a mobile device, online mediation can open up new business opportunities, especially for young, innovative mediators.

To demonstrate those two benefits of online mediation, Virtual Mediation Lab is seeking college students trained in mediation, willing to play the mediator’s role or the role of one of the parties/roommates in 3 online mediation simulations in October 2017.

Their ODR program, which expanded the department's existing mediation service, is accessible on the DCBA website. It allows parties involved in mediation to negotiate electronically at their convenience, without the need for in-person communication. Mediation can be used to resolve a number of issues including landlord and tenant disputes, neighbor disputes, debt settlements, and more.

The program was launched December 2014. As of March 2016, 230 cases were mediated using DCBA’s expanded services. Of the 230 cases, 133 cases were resolved at a resolution rate of 57%. Thanks to the ODR program, DCBA has been able to mediate cases more effectively and better serve populations who are unable to attend a traditional face to face mediation.

In 2014 a group of DCBA mediators participated in a training in online mediation and a series of online mediation simulations organized by Caroline Torosis, DCBA Dispute Resolution Program Manager, and Giuseppe Leone, founder of Virtual Mediation Lab, an online mediation project sponsored by the Association for Conflict Resolution Hawaii Chapter
Pennsylvania 2016 Mediation Conference: "Expanding Access to Mediation" - April 15-16, 2016tag:www.adrhub.com,2016-02-08:4905899:Topic:702942016-02-08T20:12:34.099ZGiuseppe Leonehttp://www.adrhub.com/profile/GiuseppeLeone

As a result, during the first hour of the workshop Giuseppe Leone, founder of Virtual Mediation Lab, explained the basics of online mediation: what it means, how it works, its benefits, how to integrate face-to-face and online mediation, how to choose a good video collaboration software, and so on.

And during the second hour, participants could not only watch a 20-min video of a simulation run with 3 members of the Pennsylvania Council of Mediators who had never participated in an online mediation before. They could also ask those 3 mediators any questions about their experience - e.g. what they liked - or didn't like - about it.

According to Barbara Foxman, the 2015 Annual Conference organizer, that "don't just tell me about online mediation - show me" approach worked very well. She sent the following message to Giuseppe Leone and Ellen Morfei, an experienced mediator who had helped Giuseppe setting up the online mediation simulation, and participated in it, playing the role of one of the parties. .

~~~
On behalf of the of the Pennsylvania Council of Mediators, we want to thank you for the excellent workshop you presented at our conference. Your workshop had "exceeded expectations" as noted on the evaluations and also participants commented that "it had lots of practical information, great use of technology and examples of how to adapt to difficulties, very cutting edge, useful with good role play examples, and attendees were appreciative of your ability to address technical difficulties. It was suggested that you do "part 2" for next year's conference."
~~~
Online Mediation - How Did You Like It?tag:www.adrhub.com,2015-04-08:4905899:Topic:650802015-04-08T20:03:30.627ZGiuseppe Leonehttp://www.adrhub.com/profile/GiuseppeLeone

During the first hour, participants will get a good grasp of Online Mediation. Connected via internet from my office in Hawaii, I will cover the following topics:

>> What Online Mediation means
>> How it works
>> How to integrate mediation by video, phone, email and face-to-face
>> Which cases are suitable for online mediation
>> Online mediation benefits
>> Mediation experience and online technology
>> Additional skills and techniques for Online Mediation
>> Which video collaboration software to use
>> Face-to-Face mediators: From skepticism to enthusiasm
>> How to get online mediation experience and training

The second hour of our workshop will be even more interesting.

First, participants we'll watch a 20-min video of a simulation run with 3 members of the Pennsylvania Council of Mediators, who had never participated in an online mediation before. Next, all mediators in the audience can ask those 3 colleagues any questions they want about their experience; for example,

>> How did online mediation work for you?
>> What did you like - or not like - about it?
>> What did surprise you?
>> After your experience, are you now more - or less - interested in online mediation?
>> Do you plan to offer online mediation for your practice?

This "don't just tell me about online mediation - show me" approach will no doubt be appreciated by those experienced face-to-face mediators who are interested in (or perhaps just curious about) this topic.

As indicated in a new 2-min video produced by Missing Children Europe, in the European Union approximately 130,000 international couples file for divorce each year. Children are involved in many of these cases. When an international family conflict escalates, it can lead to an international child abduction, also known as Parental Abduction.
