With 9 mediators and ADR practitioners in 5 different countries, we recently ran and video recorded a demo of "Shuttle Diplomacy" in Online Mediation.

In short, we demonstrated how Zoom, the online collaboration software we use for our 2-hour Training in Online Mediation and online mediation simulations, makes it so easy for online mediators to create and join separate "virtual" mediation rooms in multi-party disputes.

The new Zoom feature that makes "Shuttle Diplomacy" possible in online mediation is called "Breakout Rooms".
When in January 2012 we launched our online mediation project Virtual Mediation Lab for helping mediators around the world to practice their skills by participating in online mediation simulations, Skype Premium seemed a good choice.

Why? Because, besides allowing to have a group video conference with up to 10 people (i.e. mediators), the word “Skype” sounded familiar to them. Most mediators had heard about it, or had that software already installed on their PC or Mac.

More than 100 simulations later, run with mediators from 30 countries, we no longer use Skype Premium for our online mediation simulations or training. Instead, we now use a video conferencing software called Zoom.us – for 4 reasons.

During the upcoming virtual conference Cyberweek 2013 we'll share the results of our "Review of Video Conferencing Software for Online Mediation". This project has 2 goals:

1 - To test different video conferencing software -- like Adobe Connect, Google Hangout, Skype, GotoMeeting, Webex, Zoom.us, and so on -- using a list of criteria that any video conferencing software for online mediation is expected to meet: for example, easy and simple to use for setting up and switching between joint and private sessions; intuitive user interface, good video and audio quality, secure, pics/docs/screen sharing, annotation, online whiteboard.

Our tests will be carried out by a group of participants from around the world, who will be connected with their PC, Mac, Ipad, Iphone or Android device

2 - To grade - from 1 to 10 - how each software met our list of criteria during its test

As a result, we are seeking volunteer participants - ADR/ODR students or mediators - who are interested to participate in our tests, and will fill out an Online Exit Survey at the end of each test.

~~~
2. To test different video conferencing software — like Adobe Connect, Google Hangout, Skype, GotoMeeting, Webex, Zoom.us, etc.
~~~

After that announcement, I received a number of emails which, in short:

>> Asked “What about software X, Y or Z? Why it's not in that list?”
>> Suggested “You should test that software as well”

It appears that using the word “etc”, which according to the MacMillan Disctionary is “used after a list of things to mean 'and others of the same type'”, wasn't a good idea. It would have been better to explain our second objective more clearly, as follows:

~~~
2. To test different video conferencing software — like Adobe Connect, Google Hangout, Skype, GotoMeeting, Webex, Zoom.us, or ANY other software mediators have experience in, and are willing to demonstrate to other mediators.
~~~

I hope the above clarification helps, and I am sorry for the unnecessary confusion.
