In many organizations, the anticipated fear of doing something that might not work when resolving a conflict outweighs the anticipated benefits of taking a risk and resolving a conflict in a new way.

This anticipated fear shows up in four areas.

  • Poor customer service interactions—these…

Workplace Systemic Issues: Do Your Leaders Really Want to Know?

Rita Callahan

Like many conflict resolution or ADR professionals who start as a mediator, it doesn’t take long before a mediator doing workplace cases in one organization begins to wonder about the organization’s culture, communication, or leadership skills. “If only the organization had better practices, the mediation (or coaching or training or group facilitation) wouldn’t be needed”,…

Book Club Commentary

This week I thought I would knock out two birds with one stone and use "The No Asshole Rule" material for the ADR Book Club as my blog subject matter.

So far, we have only discussed Chapters 1-2, but it's a very book with very poignant ideas. So far the author, Robert Sutton, has introduced us to his test for spotting an ***hole: (1) Does the target feel oppressed/belittled after talking with the alleged ***hole and (2) Does the alleged ***hole aim his aggression at people…

Unexpected Leadership Lessons: Effectiveness Through Humility & Common Ground

Yet another reason to be on Twitter (follow me @ADRhub and @mediatorjeff)- I came across a retweet by conflict coach Cinnie Noble (@CINERGYCoaching) who posted the following link below. It is from David Holzmer's (@DavidHolzmer) blog and it talks about leadership qualities. For those mediators who work 'beyond neutrality' and others who work in conflict resolution, the following could be of interest:

In “Four Lesson’s in Adaptive Leadership” Professor Michael Useem makes the case… Continue

Know who you are: Living your Values

Originally posted at www.thebusinessmediator.blogspot.com

It seems that many employees are increasingly disgruntled by their employer’s failure to “walk the talk”. When an organization proclaims

it believes in something, but then behaves in a way that is contrary to

those beliefs, the results are dire. Just today, I heard an example of a

company communicating to its… Continue

Building a Case for a Diverse and Inclusive Organization

I just read an article by European researchers who set out a model for creating an environment that is

inclusive in nature for all people. The authors frame their work in

terms of an ethical challenge, rather than cost avoidance or…

Emotional Intelligence: Shadow of the Leader

(originally posted at www.thebusinessmediator.blogspot.com)

The very first CEO for whom I worked consistently referred to the importance of the "Shadow of the Leader”. His demeanor spoke of modesty and humility--no corporate jets, no extravagant cars or homes, and graciousness to all whom he encountered. Was he perfect? No, in fact he had tendencies towards micromanagement and, under stress, his graciousness bordered on… Continue
