When thinking of k-12 students as "employees," your article makes great sense as to why our educational system is losing students not only to costly dropout rates in high school but also to excessive behavioral issues and mental tune out in the primary and intermediate grades. Schools are forgetting that "...an organization must first provide its employees with a reason to want to be present each day" and must practice what they [the teachers and administrators in this case] preach by collaborating with students and engaging in conflict in a productive rather than destructive manner while encouraging friendly competition, and doing so all in "the right balance", as you state. And, of course, trust among teachers, administrators, and students is important, thus allowing for individuals to express themselves in an environment conducive to feeling and actually being heard. Education works when participants consider themselves productive and meaningful members of that organization, the school.
