Currently, we have a career opportunity as an Assistant Director of Student
Conduct & Conflict Resolution/Area Coordinator for Graduate Residential Life is responsible for
resolving and proactively addressing student conduct and conflict matters that occur on- and
off-campus (50%) and managing two graduate residence halls (50%). This is a 12-month, full-time,
live-in (two bedroom apartment in graduate residence hall provided) position that reports jointly to
the Director of Student Conduct and the Senior Assistant Director of University Residential Life.

This critical role:
-Resolves student conduct matters involving undergraduate, graduate and professional students, as
well as student groups and organizations, including representing the University in or
assisting/advising students whose cases resolved through Northwestern's formal conduct procedures,
including the University Hearing and Appeals System (UHAS) and the Sexual Assault Hearing and
Appeals System (SAHAS);
-Along with other members of the Office of Student Conduct, helps
implement a full spectrum of conflict resolution options on campus, possibly including conflict
coaching, facilitated dialogue, mediation, conciliation, and restorative justice processes in a way
that complements and enhances the existing student conduct processes and procedures on campus;
-Assists the Office of Student Conduct in creating and implementing, along with campus and
community partners, educational and outreach initiatives to acquaint students and the Northwestern
community with (a) Northwestern's community values and principles; (b) the rights and
responsibilities of students and the community; and (c) the office's services, particularly in areas
of conflict resolution;
-Assists the Office of Student Conduct in the recruitment, training
and advising of all conduct and conflict resolution partners, conduct boards (including UHAS and
SAHAS), and other campus professionals, administrators and student staff members (such as
Residential Life officials and Community Assistants, Orientation Peer Advisers, and others);
-Recruits, selects, trains, supervises, and evaluates the performance of seven graduate students
working as community assistants or student directors in three Evanston campus residence halls
(Engelhart and McManus) and one Seabury student assistant;
-Facilitates weekly meetings with
student staff in area and bi-weekly one-on-one meetings with student staff;
-Initiates,
plans, supports, tracks, and evaluates community development programs consistent with the goals and
mission of University Residential Life and DOSA;
-Advises hall staff as they plan and
implement social programs for residents;
-Assists in the assessment of resident needs and
provide leadership in the development of programs and services to meet emerging needs;
-Educates residents about University, state, and local rules and regulations;
-Collaborates
with staff to address conduct issues that affect the community including such issues as vandalism,
failure to follow security regulations, and noise;
-Trains and coaches student staff on
appropriate confrontation procedures;
-Addresses violations of University rules and
regulations promptly by holding one-on-one meetings with students, using an educational approach;
-Resolves administratively student conduct matters involving graduate hall residents on the
Evanston campus as delegated by the Senior Assistant Director for University Residence Life;
-Maintains accurate records by following procedures related to judicial database;
-Participates in departmental and area meetings;
-Participates in weekly one-on-one meetings
with supervisor;
-Acts as a liaison for the Graduate Housing staff, Kellogg Graduate School
of Management Dean of Students staff, and housekeeping staff of all graduate residential buildings
to insure effective communication;
-Addresses resident concerns and resolve them in a
satisfactory manner communicate all information to direct supervisor and others as appropriate;
-Provides quarterly, and year-end reports on the major activities of the residential area;
-Assists graduate housing staff with resident check in and check out processes;
-Monitors and
responds to safety and security concerns in the residence halls;
-Provides evening and
weekend on-call emergency response;
-Remains available by phone for staff 24 hours a day, 7
days a week, unless on vacation;
-Monitors hall staff duty schedule and provide support to
them as needed;
-Responds, in coordination with other professional Residential Life staff
members, to critical incidents in residence halls;
-Conducts well-being checks with residents
during and after their involvement in critical incidents;
-Coordinates duty coverage for
Seabury undergrad and graduate residential areas with appropriate area coordinator;
-Monitors
the security and safety functions of the graduate residence halls;
-Participates in
department and division-wide professional development activities;
-Attends regional or
national workshops/conferences for continued development and training;
-Stays current in
professional development by reviewing articles, journals, books and/or websites;
-Develops
connections with University departments including Graduate Housing, CAPS, University Police, Health
Promotion and Wellness, Student Conduct, International Office and Multicultural Center;
-Performs related duties as required or assigned.
Minimum Qualifications:
-A
master's degree in college student personnel administration or other relevant discipline equivalent
combination of education, training and experience from which comparable skills can be acquired;
-Minimum of three years full-time experience at college/university in residence life and/or
student conduct, five years preferred;
-Understanding of educational environment at highly
selective institutions like Northwestern;
-Demonstrated experience resolving student conduct
and conflict matters and in managing student residences;
-Knowledge of issues and challenges
facing undergraduate and graduate students living on- and off-campus;
-Demonstrated
experience or interest in program development, conflict resolution, graduate/professional student
affairs, and/or outreach and programming;
-Excellent written and oral communication skills;
-Evidence of commitment to continuous professional development;
-Membership in ASCA
and/or ACUHO-I considered a plus.
