Description
The Assistant Ombudsperson in the *Office of the Ombudsman* will assist
students, faculty and academic and non-academic staff in resolving problems
within the University community. The Ombudsman's Office is an informal,
confidential and independent resource for complaints brought by any person
at the University involving persons exercising authority at all levels of
Cornell University. Responsibilities include: guiding a community member to
the right procedure or office and explaining the applicable procedure to
him/her; assisting grievants in campus procedures; resolving disputes
between parties; representing (when appropriate) the merits of a complaint
to the responsible authority; recruiting persons both to serve as dispute
settlers and to assist the office in fulfilling its obligations within
University policies. Due to the nature of the responsibilities, knowledge of
and experience with Cornell University's culture, policies, structures and
operations is preferred. The confidential nature of the position
necessitates that candidates have no actual or perceived conflict of
interest.
This position is a half-time, 20 hour/week, term appointment. The
appointment period for this position will be from Fall 2010 through June 30,
2012; availability to work this part-time position on a Monday through
Friday schedule is preferred.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree and 5-7 years experience in labor relations, higher
education administration, or resolving conflicts or equivalent combination
of education and experience.
- Knowledge and understanding of human behavior and personalities.
- Exceptional listening and interviewing skills.
- Ability to identify the significant, relevant issues in a complaint.
- Ability to work with sensitive issues, to exercise good judgment under
pressure and to maintain confidentiality.
- Excellent analytical and problem solving abilities, and strong written
and oral communication skills.
