Director of Mediation Services

Community Mediation Services, Inc. (CMS), a not-for-profit agency based in Jamaica, Queens, is currently searching for a talented Director of Mediation Services to lead and develop the mediation programs.  CMS is one of the oldest and largest mediation centers in the country, renown for innovating and creating the most diverse range of applications of ADR in NYC and NYS. The Mediation Program includes referrals from the criminal, civil, family and supreme courts, 311 calls, many other social service and government agencies, as well as segments of the community. In addition, CMS is committed to working collegially with other programs in the child welfare, youth services, schools and probation systems, in each of which we apply elements of mediation in singular ways.

Major Responsibilities:

  • Lead, manage, monitor, assign, coordinate, and evaluate the work activities and staff resources of the mediation team, consisting of professionals, paraprofessionals, interns and support staff;
  • Work closely with the Executive Director in supervising staff, mediator rosters and quality assurance protocols to ensure delivery of the highest quality mediation services;
  • Recruit and train volunteer mediators, as well as develop a training marketing strategy and plan;
  • Establish and maintain effective communications with supporting and/or complementary community and social service programs, developing and fostering community outreach and resources;
  • Organize and compile monthly and quarterly statistical data for funding sources reports;
  • Manage all client issues, including questions, complaints, compliance, and related concerns;
  • Evaluate team and program performance and recommend improvements in operating procedures, work processes or administrative practices;
  • Develop team goals, implement operating procedures, conduct fiscal performance evaluations with team members, determine staff and mediator training needs, arrange for and conduct staff and mediator training programs, mentor and coach staff and mediators, and provide direction and feedback to staff and volunteers;
  • Perform other agency functions and supervisory duties as required

Job Qualifications

This hands-on position requires a mature, poised individual who possesses the requisite knowledge, skills and abilities to manage all aspects of mediation services with a high level of professionalism, competency, and efficiency.

  • Master’s or Law degree preferred; a demonstrated commitment to conflict resolution and mediation necessary.
  • Experience in mediating disputes required. 
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and organizational skills. 
  • Commitment to the values and mission of CMS.
  • Highly motivated, self-directed with strong leadership qualities
  • Superior communication, presentation and writing skills
  • Co-leadership of the CMS Training Institute requires understanding of and experiences with facilitation and training
  • The candidate should be an independent worker and be flexible to meet the needs of a non-profit environment.
