General Duties: This position performs high-level executive administrative functions.

Campus Specific Information:

The Center for International Peace and Justice at CUNY School of Law (hereinafter "CIPJ"), which will open during the 2013-14 academic year, will train outstanding servants of international peace and justice to become attorneys equipped with the experience and expertise to develop into leaders in the field.  The CIPJ will support advocacy for international peace and justice in partnership with communities locally and around the world, with the goal of making lasting change to enhance equality, sustainability, and the rule of law.

Reporting to the Dean of the School of Law, the Director of the Center for International Peace and Justice will have the unique opportunity to implement the initial vision and chart the strategic course for the coming years, taking ownership of program development, fundraising, and day-to-date administration of the CIPJ. 

The Executive Director will, among other things:

  • Working with an advisory board and key faculty members, create a five-year strategic plan for the CIPJ.
  • Design and execute sustainable CIPJ initiatives.
  • In close coordination with the Office of Institutional Advancement, secure philanthropic gifts and grants from individuals, foundations, corporations, and government entities for annual operating expenses and long-term endowment-building.
  • Oversee and steward the grants, contracts, and philanthropic support received for CIPJ programming.
  • Working with the Office of Institutional Advancement, develop and implement strategies for communicating the work of the CIPJ to a wide variety of audiences, including general and professional media, the public, and students.
  • Develop the criteria and selection processes for recruiting CIPJ scholars-in-residence and fellows, and implement the process.
  • Supervise the work of CIPJ scholars-in-residence and fellows.
  • Design and implement regular conferences, lectures, and the annual Retreat on Communications for Peace, including the selection of topic areas, recruitment of guest speakers, and management and promotion of events in collaboration with the Office of Institutional Advancement and the School's Director of Special Events.
  • Conceptualize, research, and write strong publications for the CIPJ.
  • Edit the writing of scholars-in-residence for publication, support students' scholarly writing on peace and justice, and develop research, manuscripts, and books, as appropriate, for the CIPJ.

This position may include weekend and evening hours.


Minimum Qualifications:

This position is in CUNY's Executive Compensation Plan.  All executive positions require a minimum of a Bachelor's degree and eight years' related experience.  Additional qualifications are defined below.


Other Qualifications:

  • J.D. degree from an accredited school of law.
  • At least 10 years progressive experience working on international peace and justice issues in academic, government, nonprofit, or NGO settings.
  • Demonstrated experience and success in raising funds from individual, corporate, foundation, and government entities.
  • Experience in significant program design and management in a related field.
  • Exceptional written and oral communications skills.
  • Experience in communicating effectively with a wide range of constituencies.
