Long Island Alliance - COORDINATOR – Peace Educator and Community Organizer

The position requires a strong interest in issues related to “peaceful alternatives”—an end to the current wars in Afghanistan and Iraq, a shift in budget priorities to promote human security, and advocacy for nuclear disarmament. The position requires excellent organizing, writing and communication skills, organizational management, and computer literacy. A background in community organizing and peace studies would be very valuable.

The position is for three days a week, beginning on September 1, 2010.

Responsibilities include:

• Expanding the number of persons and constituencies engaged in peace activism on Long Island.

• Bridging younger and older generations of peace activists.

• Working with members to develop educational programs that promote a culture of peace.

• Organizing diverse constituencies to advocate for a new US foreign policy and for
reordering budget priorities.

• Coordinating legislative visits and communicating with LI elected officials.

• Serving as spokesperson for the Alliance.

• Representing the LI Alliance at meetings of local and national organizations.
