ISLAMABAD: The role of media in insurgencies is to be that of a
catalyst in the process for conflict resolution through interpersonal
mediation, said Prof Dr Masrur Alam, head of Department of Mass
Communication, NUST, on Tuesday.

He was speaking to a seminar on ‘Electronic Media and Interpersonal
Discourse: Mediation in Crises’, organised by NUST Business School. He
said heavy TV viewing led to a life of uncertainties.

IN A MONTH in which the news was dominated by disputes involving
British Airways, the railways and the Edinburgh tram works, there was
less reporting of a significant agreement reached between the UK
government and the three devolved administrations.

The Protocol for Avoidance and Resolution of Disputes is designed to
provide a framework for addressing and resolving differences and
disagreements among the four governments.

...Fundamentally, the Protocol is designed to ensure that differences
are dealt with at the lowest possible level, with clear provision for
the next stages should resolution not be achieved.

As a general principle, the parties will seek to avoid disputes
arising in the first place and, to do so, commit to the principles of
good communication and co-operation. The importance of this cannot be
over-stated.

It is well recognised that the majority of disputes arise or escalate
through unsophisticated or ineffective communication.
