This basic 40-hour mediation training is designed to give participants the skills and tools they need to serve as neutral third party mediators. This is an
experiential training using a wide range of formats including role plays,
videos, lectures, discussions, and skills demonstrations. This training has
been designed to meet the 40-hour course requirement many mediation centers,
courts, and other agencies use to qualify mediators. This workshop is designed
for attorneys, mental health professionals, human resource professionals,
educators, supervisors, faith community leaders, and anyone who would like to
improve their conflict management and communication skills. Participants in
this training will learn the Seven-Step Mediation Process from the book The
Mediator's Handbook by Jennifer Beer. Participants will also learn a four-step
process for identifying and addressing conflict. Participants will be given the
skills to see conflict in a whole new way. Among the many topics the training
will cover:



- Overview of alternative dispute resolution
- Execution of the mediation process
- Role of the mediator
- Use of neutral language
- Overcoming stalemates
- Questioning techniques
- Legal and ethical issues
- Drafting mediated agreements

Space in this training is limited to 20 participants.  Early registration is encouraged to guarantee a place in the training.

Early registration for this training is at the discounted price of $945 if received by September
30, 2010.

After September 30, 2010, the full tuition price is $995.

A deposit of $100 is required to hold your seat. Payment for the full tuition
amount must be made before the first day of training.

A limited number of full or partial scholarships may be available based on need
and/or commitment to community service and will be awarded on a case-by-case
basis.  Please call to request an application.


Tuition cost includes meals, daily snacks, books, and materials.


Please arrange your outside obligations around the class schedule so you will be in attendance for the full 40 hours of training.  Participants must attend

About the Trainers:


Jessica Hynes, J.D., is a mediator, trainer and an Assistant Professor at Quinnipiac University in
Hamden, Connecticut.   She received a B.S. degree in human
development and family studies from Cornell University and a J.D. from Boston
College Law School.  She spent eight years as a professor at two different
law schools before joining the Legal Studies faculty at Quinnipiac, where she
teaches a variety of legal and conflict resolution classes.  Jessica has
worked with community mediation organizations in both Rhode Island and
Connecticut and has trained both college students and adults in the mediation
process.  She is a member of the New England Chapter of the Association
for Conflict Resolution, the Association of Family and Conciliation Courts, and
the Connecticut Council for Divorce Mediation and Collaborative Practice.

Joe Brummer is an experienced trainer and mediator and the Associate
Executive Director of Community Mediation, Inc. Joe has presented workshops in
Connecticut, Rhode Island, Vermont, and Pennsylvania. He has presented at
Southern Connecticut State University, the University of New Haven, Quinnipiac
University, and a number of national health education conferences.  He has
clocked hundreds of hours at the mediation table facilitating in a wide variety
of areas including workplace disputes, landlord/tenant conflicts, neighborhood
disputes, civil law suits, and victim offender mediation. Joe was trained as a
mediator at the Community Mediation Center of RI and served on their Juvenile
Restorative Justice Advisory Board.  He was trained at the Institute for
the Study and Practice of Nonviolence where he worked with at-risk youth to
teach nonviolence and peace-making. He is also a well respected for sharing his experiences with
Nonviolent Communication℠.
