The New York Peace Institute will give you the skills and support you need to become an effective and confident mediator. In the past 30 years we have trained thousands of individuals including: community members, attorneys, educators, social workers, students, entrepreneurs, diplomats, police officers, and hostage negotiators. We have also trained government agencies, schools, universities, non-government organizations, and private corporations. Train with us and join the ranks of the largest civilian peacekeeping force in New York City!

Training Overview:

Our 40-hour Basic Mediation Training provides the foundation for individuals interested in practicing mediation in Community Dispute Resolution Centers and all other contexts. Whether you’ve studied conflict resolution before or are newly interested in this field, this training will help you understand:

  • What mediation is and how it relates to other forms of alternative dispute resolution;
  • How the mediation process works; and
  • The role of the mediator in enhancing understanding between parties in conflict.

The training is led by Elena Sapora, our in-house NY Office of Court Administration-certified trainer, with support from our Chief Executive Officer, Brad Heckman, our Special Projects Coordinator, Alan Gross, and other experts on staff. The training is widely recognized in New York and beyond, and individuals who apply for this training are also encouraged to apply for our 12-week apprenticeship program.

Our Training Approach:

We are committed to engaging participants in the learning process and creating a safe, high-energy, and participatory learning environment. We draw upon various training methodologies to meet the needs of all types of learners. Our innovative training model uses graphics, interactive exercises, multimedia, live demonstrations, and role play. We also limit each training to 28 participants to ensure that people are able to interact with one another and with our trainers.

We believe in experiential learning, and role play and small breakout groups are critical parts of our program. During role plays, participants will work in small groups of 3-4 people with the support of a New York Peace Institute coach who will observe the role plays, debrief with participants, and provide supportive feedback. Role plays are conducted 4 out of 5 days of the program.

Key Content:

  • Enhancing communication and conflict resolution skills
  • Distinguishing between various dispute resolution practices and mediation styles
  • Examining the core values of mediation and putting them into practice
  • Understanding conflict response styles
  • Distinguishing between parties’ positions and interests
  • Identifying negotiable issues
  • Helping parties engage in creative problem solving
  • Examining how cultural issues affect conflict
  • Drafting a quality mediation agreement
  • Assessing balance of power issues between parties

CLE Credit:

New York State attorneys can receive 34 CLE credits for the basic mediation training.

What Our Participants Are Saying:

“I attended the Basic mediation Training and it was one of the most engaging, creative, amazing trainings I have ever attended. I have participated in thousands of trainings and usually find myself distracted and bored. However, this 40-hour training kept me involved and actively learning from start to finish!”  ~ Vivian Huelgo, American Bar Association, CDV Chief Counsel

“The New York Peace Institute gave me the skills to handle complex conflict situations from the grassroots level to the national government level in Somalia.”

~ Kiyoshi Matsukawa, Programme Officer, United Nations Political Office for Somalia

Apprenticeship Program Overview:

Once you’ve completed a 30-hour basic mediation training you are eligible to apply for our Apprenticeship Program. This program enables participants to unpack the mediation process through in-depth analysis, hands-on practice, case observation, and role play. As an apprentice you will work with 3-4 other apprentices under the guidance of an experienced New York Peace Institute Mediator Mentor to role-play, observe, and co-mediate actual cases. In order to gain real-life experience you will also co-mediate or mediate 5 cases under direct supervision during your apprenticeship meetings as well as outside of classroom time. Each group will meet once a week for 2.5 hours at a designated morning or evening time in either our Brooklyn or Manhattan community mediation centers or civil courts. After completing the Apprenticeship Program, our unique video evaluation process is the final step toward mediator approval and certification with New York Peace Institute.

New York State requires that all individuals practicing mediation in a Community Dispute Resolution Center complete a 30-hour basic mediation training with a New York State-certified trainer and also complete a New York State-approved apprenticeship program.
