US News and World Report named mediation one of the best careers for 2009, commenting about its potential even in an economic downturn (www.usnews.com/articles/business/best-careers/2008/12/11/best-careers-2009-mediator.html).

Good Shepherd Mediation Program, Philadelphia’s only nonprofit community mediation center, offers a 24-hour workshop that will train you to become a mediator.  This workshop will teach you facilitation skills and techniques to enhance communication, conflict resolution, information gathering, perspective-taking, problem-solving, interest-based negotiating, and agreement writing.  Some of the topics covered include: confidentiality, mediator neutrality, active listening, the mediation process, and the legal and ethical considerations involved in mediating disputes.  The training format includes mini-lecture, video, individual, small, and large group exercises, role-playing family, neighborhood, and small claims mediations.  You must attend all 24 hours to receive a Certificate of Completion. Trainees are invited to apprentice at GSMP at no extra cost.

The cost is:    $450.00 (no CLE)

$500.00 (for attorneys licensed to practice law in PA seeking 19.5 CLE credits: 18.5 substantive and 1.0 ethics).

Some scholarships are available to community members who agree to volunteer at GSMP.
