Exciting New Feature of the Conference

The 2016 conference to be held September 28 - October 1 in Baltimore will feature seven “New Voices” to present in “prime time” on the conference schedule.  This year’s conference organizers are reaching out across the globe to hear from students and new practitioners & researchers in the field.

What we want to feature

  • An area of research done by the presenter and which will engage our diverse membership in thinking in new ways or which would potentially inform the practice of our members. The presentation will feature highlights and illustration of what was learned.
  • A unique project or area of practice in which the presenter was engaged. The presentation may either give the rationale and highlights of the project or it may demonstrate some aspect of the work that can make it “come to life” for the audience.

The jury panel is looking for exciting practice or research that will enhance the knowledge and practice of our diverse membership.  The panel will select the 12 minute presentations based on both substance and presentation.

Additional opportunity

The conference presentation will also be videoed and featured on the ACR website.  Additionally, a select number of submissions that were not selected for presentation at the conference will be invited to submit a video for the website.

Who is eligible to apply

All current or recent students in programs specializing in conflict resolution or interdisciplinary programs in which conflict studies are an integral part may apply.  Practitioners who may not have been students in certificate or degree programs but have done other forms of training and have entered the field in the last five years are also invited to apply.

ABOUT THE PRESENTATION

Each presentation at the ACR September 28 – October1, 2016 Annual Conference will be focused on:

  • An area of research done by the presenter and which will engage our membership in thinking in new ways or which would potentially inform the practice of our members or
  • A unique project or area of practice in which the presenter was engaged. The presentation may either give the rationale and highlights of the project or it may demonstrate some aspect of the work that can make it “come to life” for the audience.

The presentation serves three primary functions: 1) to inform our membership about a topic in which they might not have engaged and/or excite them about new possibilities in the field; 2) to inspire our membership with the high quality of work being done by those preparing to enter or newly practicing in the field; 3) to give an opportunity to a number of our newest professionals to demonstrate the contribution being made by the “New Voices” in the field.

While these presentations are short (12-15 minutes), they will be dynamic and with high quality information, without being unnecessarily rushed.  This means that presenters will have to choose key highlights, indicate why this may be important to the field, and note what has already been learned so far and is left to be learned by the presenter or anyone working in the area.

The initial proposal should contain enough specific information about the presentation that it can capture the imagination of the jury panel.

The time allocations for the presentations have been left as variable (12 – 15 minutes) both because different time slots will allow different lengths and also to allow for translation, if necessary.

THE PRESENTATION WILL CONTAIN
a clear sense of:

  • the presenter’s passion for the work
  • the core of the project or research
  • why it is unique, significant, or inspiring
  • what has been learned from the work

SUBMISSION GUIDELINES - DOWNLOAD THE APPLICATIONS.pdf

  1. Only one presentation can be submitted per person, and you may submit to either the region that you consider your “home” region or the place where you are currently enrolled in school or are temporarily working.
  2. Submissions will be to the designated jury panel contact person for the geographic region you have selected (see map for your US regions).  Alaska and Hawaii are part of the western region, Canada is its own region, and all other countries and territories are considered part of the International Region.
  3. Contacts for each of the regions are as follows:
    • Western region:  Camille Valentine, valentinecamille@gmail.com
    • Midwest region:  Bryan Hanson, Creighton University BryanHanson@creighton.edu
    • South & Southwest region:  Judith Mckay, NOVA Southeastern University. mckayj@nova.edu
    • Northeast region:  Julian Portilla, Woodbury Institute of Champlain College. jportilla@champlain.edu
    • Canada:  Mary Damianakis, McGill University marydamianakis@hotmail.com
    • International (all countries and regions other than US and Canada):  Jared Ordway, Woodbury Institute of Champlain College.  jaredordway@gmail.com
  4. All current students in programs specializing in conflict resolution or in interdisciplinary programs and recent graduates (5 years) in which conflict studies are an integral part, may apply.  Additionally, persons who may not have been students in certificate or degree programs but have done other forms of training and have entered the field in the last five years are invited to submit.
  5. Students registered in academic programs do not have to be ACR members in order to submit proposals.  Practitioners and researchers in the field must be current ACR members.
  6. Those accepted for presentation at the conference are responsible for their own travel, accommodations, and meals.  Presenters at a meal-time plenary will be guests of the conference for that meal.  In an instance where an institution has a current student or a graduate selected for presentation at the conference, the New Voices project is encouraging the institution to help by providing some financial support.
  7. Videos of conference presentation and videos selected to be featured on the ACR web site are the property of ACR and may be used without permission of creator.

THE PROCESS

  1. By March 15, initial proposal submissions will have been sent via email to the appropriate regional contact person.  The submissions are to be no longer than two double-spaced typed pages.  The submission will be accompanied by the completed application form.  Each page of the submission will have the applicant’s name.
  2. Five applications will be selected from each region and those applicants will be asked to prepare a 5 – 7 minute video to submit to the region. Applicants selected for a video submission will be notified by April 5.
  3. The video is not expected to cover all of the material that would be in the final 12 -15 minute presentation.  Rather it is to either give an overview of the heart of the presentation or to actually do a small piece of what the presentation might look like.  This video is so that the panel can assess the quality of presentation style and have more information about the presentation.  The video may be made using home computer or mobile device and the production quality does not have to be high so long as the presenter can be easily seen and heard.
  4. All videos submissions will be made through Vimeo.  The link will be sent to your contact person by May 2.
  5. Each region will send its final three proposals and send them to the national panel by May 20.
  6. The seven applicants selected for presentation at the conference will be notified by June 10. The seven will be chosen based on the strength of the application. A region is not guaranteed that it will have an applicant chosen, but the final selection will be made with consideration to diversity, including geographic.
  7. The presenters will then communicate with:
  8. The ACR staff re publicity, registration, and arrangements the presentation (video, etc.).
  9. The New Voices contact person assigned to them.

 THE CALENDAR
