Position Description - Disarmament Intern

The Disarmament Intern will provide support for WFUNA’s disarmament program
-primarily focusing on Students for a Nuclear Weapons-Free World- in
cooperation with key staff members.

With the encouragement of our Honorary President Dr. Hans Blix, since 2006
WFUNA has been running a program called Students for a Nuclear Weapons-Free
World. In 2006 and 2008 we conducted global competitions on the theme of a
world free of nuclear weapons. The first year it was an essay competition, and
in the second year an essay/ video/ poster competition for students around the
world. We are interested in implementing the program again this year.

Responsibilities include:
• Writing the project proposal for Students for a Nuclear Weapons-Free World
2010, including determining the structure, goals and rules of the competition
• Implementing the program: creating and maintaining a section on the WFUNA
website, producing a timeline, developing partnerships with other NGOs and
Universities, promoting the competition, revitalizing the existing SNWFW
network, reaching out to alumni, putting together materials and resources on
the topic, conducting the competition, assembling an expert panel of judges,
receiving and organizing the submissions, coordinating judging and prize, and
follow-up and evaluation
• The position may include some fundraising, including researching in-kind
donors and other funding for the program

Additional responsibilities/ opportunities may include:
• Representing WFUNA at meetings, and staying updated on disarmament issues at
the United Nations, especially the NPT Review Conference (May 2010) and sharing
relevant information with SNWFW network and interested UNAs
• Reporting to the WFUNA Secretary-General on disarmament issues at the UN
• Contributing written materials to the online magazine UN Connections
• Attending meetings of the NGO Committee on Disarmament
• Assisting with some administrative duties at the office

Some of the opportunities:
1. The WFUNA Secretariat is located at UN Headquarters in New York. The
Disarmament Intern will have access to the United Nations building, conferences
and events and resources such as the UN Library.
2. This position offers an excellent networking opportunity – the Disarmament
Intern will be able to make contact with UN staff, diplomats, UNA members,
academics, and NGOs in the disarmament community, and meet other interns from
around the world who are working at the UN.

Additional considerations:

Prior coursework/ academic background and/or practical experience in the field
of disarmament is a must.

Preference will be given to candidates with prior UNA experience.

Familiarity of the UN system is beneficial.

Strong writing, drafting and computer skills are necessary.

Fluency in English is required; knowledge of a foreign language is a plus.
