Summary & Scope of Position
This is a key leadership position in the
newly created and developing Office of Intercultural Education (OIE). The
primary role is to assist the Associate Dean/Director in the development and
implementation of programming among all constituencies designed to coordinate
academic, social, and residential programs to support students from populations
underrepresented in higher education, and to identify opportunities to connect
all members of the Bates community in the essential work of bridging cultural
differences in order to strengthen and enrich our lives.
Qualifications:
Education:
• Bachelor’s degree in cultural
studies, history, sociology, anthropology, or related area required.
Experience:
• Demonstrated knowledge of and work experience with
issues relating to race, gender diversity, sexual orientation and multi-faith
matters.
• Strong commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion in higher
education and human relations.
• Experience in working with students from
underrepresented backgrounds.
• Demonstrated ability to engage in
problem-solving and mediation.
• Prior experience with cultural program
planning and development.
• Familiarity with the qualities and
characteristics of a nationally distinguished, highly selective, and high
quality residential liberal arts college.
• Demonstrated ability to
interact with variety of groups, including students, faculty, staff, parents and
alumni.

• Experience with PC or Macintosh
operations, including hardware, software, and networking.
• Ability to

Responsibilities, Tasks, Duties,
Responsibilities
• Work with students, faculty and other administrative
offices in program planning, development, implementation and assessment of
programs that encourage persistence towards graduation for students from
underrepresented populations, and increasing cultural competence for all
students at the College.
• Drafts letters of invitation (to speakers,
performers, conference presenters) and contracts for review by the Associate
Dean/Director.
• Maintains files for potential programs.
• Supervise
student Program Assistants and other student employees.
• Acts as a resource
and advisor to designated student organizations.
• Accompanies students to
off campus events and programs.
• Provide a welcoming environment for all
students.
• Work closely with Associate Dean/Director to provide academic
and personal support to students.
• Provide service during evenings and
weekends when required.
