Position Summary
Princeton seeks an Ombuds Officer who will work to ensure that members of the campus community are treated fairly and equitably. The Ombuds Officer handles confidential complaints and provides neutral, informal, and confidential conflict resolution services. S/he supplements, but does not replace, the University's formal grievance mechanisms and modes of redress. 

The Ombuds Officer serves in an advisory capacity to the Provost and other senior administrators by identifying trends and emerging needs. The Ombudsperson has general administrative responsibility over the University's Ombuds Office. S/he provides oversight and leadership to peer mediators who assist staff members in resolving work-related issues, S/he may provide coaching and training to interested individuals and assist with administrative trouble-shooting of problems that come to the attention of the office. 
 

Essential Qualifications
The successful candidate must have a bachelor's degree or equivalent and at least five to seven years of relevant experience in higher education administration and/or professional ombuds work. Strong interpersonal, communication, administrative, and organizational skills are required. The successful candidate will be able to demonstrate a deep knowledge and understanding of how to operate in a complex and collaborative organization and will have the capacity to counsel individuals and groups effectively.

The grade level of the position (8 or 9) will be commensurate with the qualifications of the selected candidate. 

The final candidate for the position must sucessfully complete a background check. 
 

Preferred Qualifications
An advanced degree is preferred, as is prior work experience in an academic setting. Familiarity with Princeton University or a comparable institution of higher education is desirable. The successful candidate will have a deep appreciation of the need for confidentiality and professionalism required by the ombuds role; formal training in the ombuds profession, the legal profession, or another relevant field is preferred. The demonstrated ability to build rapport and credibility rapidly, to work with diverse individuals from all sectors of the university community, and to design and deliver training collaboratively is also strongly preferred.
