What is your ADR experience? (trainings and education)
I am a trainer in workplace mediation, negotiation and conflict competence, with international accreditation as a mediator from the Centre for Effective Dispute Resolution in London - the world’s gold standard in the field. I have authored a comprehensive training course in interest based dispute settlement, titled ‘Managing Conflict for Increased Productivity’.

By equipping staff to self-manage conflict as it arises, they become empowered to facilitate successful conflict conversations, effect proven managerial mediation techniques, and employ similar interest-based proficiencies.

Learning, interaction and contribution -
I feel it is important to stay abreast and engage with an international network of professionals. Working within the South African environment, where inherent and unspoken conflict lies deep, provides an unparalleled opportunity to explore and propound best practices. The ability to listen, absorb, comprehend and resolve a diverse range of complex issues is something I wish to share as part of my own professional development.

What else do you want to tell the ADRhub.com community (what you are up to, what you would like to do in ADR, etc.)
I started my professional career in the cut and thrust of the jewelry industry, developing my street sense and astute judgment of life and business. With a rare combination of left and right brain capacity, I now blend my strategic thinking with innovative problem-solving skills. Reaching the heart of any matter, I excel at easing tense situations. I aim to find effective, sustainable solutions, even if tough decisions are sometimes required.

As the CEO of Malamed Interest Based Resolution, a dispute resolution consulting and training firm, I undertake to increase organisational productivity through the effective management of conflict. I am a great believer in the positive ripple-effect of effective conflict management. When an individual goes home armed with new skills for resolving conflict, not only do they benefit themselves, but so do their family, their friends, and their communities. While adding to the productivity and profitability of any organisation, Interest-based dispute resolution becomes an essential component of conflict management in all enterprises.

In my leisure time I love walking along the magnificent coastal routes of the Atlantic seaboard of Cape Town with my friend Maxi. She is currently a Golden Retriever, but possibly a reincarnation of Gandhi. Huguette, my best friend and partner, also happens to be my wife. Dining outdoors with her is always special, even though her home cooked food is better than any restaurant’s – and it’s always alfresco at home. In terms of jewelry design, she thinks she’s the cat’s meow and forgets that she married in to a multi-generational family of top jewelry designers, goldsmiths, gemstone experts and manufacturers. Despite this, Huguette is definitely among the best 100 jewelry designers in the world and her company, which we established in 1989, is named Maxi’s Jewelry Merchants – what a coincidence!
