Tom A. Kosakowski - The Oakland County Circuit Court has appointed an Ombudsman to serve as a liaison between the judiciary and local attorneys for a six month trial period. Joel H. Serlin, an attorney with "a stellar reputation as a lawyer, mediator and arbitrator" will serve as the Ombuds. He will seek to address and facilitate issues and concerns raised by attorneys regarding active matters before the court.

You’d think I’d be over getting amazed at how real, intense and engrossing online interactions can be. After all – after years of mediating online, and teaching online, designing online processes and writing about relational effects and negotiation aspects of online interaction, I should really internalize the power of the online and the ability of skilled people to humanize it.

Still, Cyberweek always manages to have me shaking my head in amazement (in real life, not some kind of avataral head-wagging). Hosted for the second year in a row on ADRHub, the ADR portal and networking site set up and run by The Werner Institute for Negotiation and Dispute Resolution atCreighton University School of LawCyberweek’s program offered participants three major types of venues: asynchronous discussion forums, live streaming video webinars and off-site activities.

JAMS Foundation Awards Nearly $125,000 in New Grants

Irvine, Calif. – The nonprofit JAMS Foundation announced that it approved eight new grants to organizations using innovative ways to promote and advance conflict prevention and dispute resolution. The foundation will distribute the money in the form of Foundation Grants, which provide financial support up to $50,000 for ADR initiatives with national impact, and Opportunity Grants, which award up to $10,000 for smaller scale and more localized projects.

At 11:30 am, on the 17th day of December 2010, 26 year old Mohammed Bouazizi, an impoverished high school graduate, pour gasoline on himself in front of the provincial headquarters where he was denied redress for confiscation by the police of his unlicensed vegetable cart. 28 days later, the 23 year old regime of dictator Zine el Abidine Ben Ali collapsed, so great was the sound of Mohammed’s burnt voice to the citizens of Tunisia.  Mohammed ignited a courageous conversation in one of the Middle East’s worst authoritarian societies and galvanized a nation out of lethargy into direct political action.
