Mutuality in Interpersonal Conflict

Cinnie Noble- When we are in conflict, our experience of it is not something we are always able to articulate. What is really going on forus, to what we are reacting, what we are attributing to ‘the other person’ and so on are often clouded with our emotional responses. Similarly and probably to an even greater degree, we do not have a full sense about where the other person is coming from. We hear their perspective through a lens that is foggy with our own viewpoints, feelings and confusion.

Healthy Conflict and Happiness

When Lee Elliot came to me with his ideas to improve the quality of life in his town, Grand Island, NE, through the integration of healthy conflict engagement principles and training regarding conflict resolution skills I felt this could be a wonderful opportunity to really bring the work we do into the mainstream. This project ultimately would make Grand Island the first ever city to create an integrated conflict management system available for their entire community. I told him I was on board and would be happy to support him in any way that I could. If this project could be successful in Grand Island, it could become a model that could be carried out in communities across the country.
The project Lee is working on is called “The Wonderful Life” project and is aimed at raising the quality of life and sense of happiness in his community...

Abstract:
Noam Ebner- This article introduces the "pseudo-reality" method of constructing and conducting conflict resolution training workshops. This method focuses on creating a backdrop against which participants engage in negotiation and mediation skill-building, using real-life events and facts - but only to the extent that these events and facts promote the learning process. By creating pseudo-reality, trainers can overcome learning-hampering effects resulting from participants' strong preconceptions or bias on a topic, while at the same time preserving the advantages of working within a familiar, realistic environment.

This method is meant to be used when the main goal of a workshop is skill-building rather than imparting substantive knowledge of a conflict. The method is demonstrated by describing its use at a workshop conducted recently in Cyprus, in which the Israeli-Palestinian conflict served as a backdrop for conflict resolution skill-building. Finally, the article provides a model designed to help conflict resolution trainers create pseudo-reality in their own workshop frameworks.
