Employee & Labor Relations Manager - Stanford University

Overview:
The employee and labor relations manager at Stanford University provides employee and labor relations support to specific departments, as well as performs employee and labor relations activities university-wide. The ELR manager provides case management services to human resource managers and line managers in accordance with University policies in non-union situations and guidance relative to employees covered by a collective bargaining agreement. The ELR manager also manages a variety of employee and labor relations projects.

More specifically:
Provides counsel, advice and expertise to local Human Resources Managers and department administrators in interpreting and applying University policies, collective bargaining agreements and on matters involving employee performance, layoff and leaves of absence. Facilitates resolution of and mediates employee/supervisor differences and conducts employee relations investigations.

Investigates and responds to outside charges or formal complaints filed again Stanford, including working with other offices on campus where needed, such as the Office of General Counsel, the Sexual Harassment Policy Office and the Office of the Ombuds.

Reviews and approves disciplinary matters, terminations and layoffs. Designs, develops and delivers training on a variety of human resources topics and issues – e.g. sexual harassment, basic supervision, conducting investigations, and contract interpretation. Manages unemployment insurance claims for areas responsible for. Serves as the primary adjudication manager and subject matter expert on background checks.

Qualifications:
Extensive knowledge of state and federal employment and labor laws and current employee and labor relations practices are required and this includes experience in conflict resolution, performance management, mediation facilitation and the dynamics of problem solving and negotiation. Alternative dispute program experience required.

Must have specific knowledge regarding the Americans with Disabilities Act, workers compensation procedures, Family and Medical Leave Act, background check processes, and other relevant employment practices and laws.

Demonstrated ability to develop curriculum training and effectively deliver training required. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are essential along with strong analytical and interpersonal skills.

Ability to handle confidential and politically sensitive matters is required. Demonstrated ability to form effective working relationship with people at all levels within an organization and to successfully resolve problems in the workplace.

Strong computer skills in Microsoft Word, Excel and PowerPoint are required. Must be able to work independently within a team environment.

Project management skills in a multiple location/unit environment are required. A working knowledge of ERISA requirements is important along with immigration requirements. Experience with background check programs, administration and adjudication is highly desirable.

A minimum of seven years of employee and labor relations experience, including conflict resolution, dispute resolution, and collective bargaining.
