The National Institute for Civil Discourse is a national, nonpartisan center for debate, research, education and policy generation regarding civic engagement and civility in public discourse consistent with First Amendment principles. It offers an institutional home to support research and policy generation, as well as a set of innovative programs to increase public demand for healthier political conduct and to shape political incentives in ways that improve our nation's democratic processes and institutions. The Institute was created in February 2011 at the University of Arizona as a positive force for change that promotes vigorous political debate and constructive democratic discourse. See website for further information http://nicd.arizona.edu

The Executive Director will build upon the Institute's initial design and infrastructure by leveraging the expertise and strength of a Working Board and a prominent National Board of Advisors. The Executive Director must possess passion for the health of our democracy, entrepreneurial vision and drive to lead, and practical familiarity with management, national media, and "inside the beltway" politics. A collaborative style is desired to lead the immediate team as well as affiliated faculty in establishing the Institute as a national institution and catalyzing the future of American civil discourse.

The Executive Director will be supported by a core staff including individuals such as a managing director, a development director, a communications director and/or a research director. Although the expected FTE-equivalent staff will be small (5-10), the Institute will have access to a broad array of services, talent and expertise from The University of Arizona community. As a University of Arizona employee, the Executive Director will report to the Director of the School of Government and Public Policy.

Outstanding UA benefits include health, dental, and life insurance; sick leave and holidays; UA/ASU/NAU tuition reduction for employee and qualified family members; access to campus cultural and recreational activities; retirement, and more!
* Strategic leadership and vision for civil discourse: identifying issues that merit further attention, ascertaining the appropriate resources, and fostering collaborative engagement with other organizations and networks in adjacent fields.

* Creatively moving the organization forward, beyond initial scope of the founding board and staff.

* Governance responsibilities including establishing financial viability of the organization, which will include working with development director and board members to raise an endowment to cover the organization's operations as well as grants and contributions to support programmatic goals over time.

* Mobilizing for civil discourse nationally by raising the profile of the Institute and reaching appropriate audiences through public speaking, authorship, thought leadership and efforts to leverage the prominence of the National Board. Because the Executive Director will be the public face of the Institute, significant travel is anticipated and media exposure will be extensive.

* Working with the Institute's research leadership to create a stronger interdisciplinary research field of civil discourse that will provide insight into and legitimacy for improving American politics.

* Working with staff, board and partners to develop programs that shift incentives and structures to improve the quality of our nation's civil discourse.
Not applicable for this position.
The Executive Director should have a demonstrated record of being able to create, execute, and manage entrepreneurial agendas, and preferably possesses professional experience and credibility in the spheres of both mainstream politics and civic renewal. He/she should ideally possess:

* Five or more years in a leadership role at a private or public sector, educational or non-profit organization.

* Significant achievements in private and foundation fundraising.

* Past success in fostering change.

* Undergraduate degree required.

* Experience working with local and national political leaders and the national media.

* Passion about improving the health of our democracy.

* Demonstrated success reaching diverse audiences using oral and written communication skills.

* Track record of developing and maintaining institutional, political, and personal relationships and networks.

* Experience managing cross-functional teams, strong collaborative leadership skills, flexibility working with a broad range of people.

* Ability to understand and convey the importance of research for civil discourse with confidence and enthusiasm.

* Comfortable working with researchers in an academic setting.
Graduate degree strongly preferred.
