Paul Merlyn completed a graduate degree in International Relations with focus on dispute resolution from Lancaster University in 1993. He has also completed advanced training in parent-teen mediation, custody mediation, and victim-offender mediation and has mediated approximately 400 divorce, family, and workplace disputes. In addition to his work with New Resolution, he is a mediation coach for Foothill De Anza College’s mediation certificate program, a meetings facilitator for the City of San Francisco and the City of San Mateo, and a former board director of the Association for Dispute Resolution of Northern California. He is also an approved mediator for civil disputes by the Superior Court of San Francisco.

Not Mea Culpa: Mediators' Talent for the Blame Game

Spend a little time inside any mediators’ discussion group and it won’t be long before someone complains how hard it is to be a full-time mediator. Interestingly, they invariably externalize blame, attributing it primarily to two causes: (i) prospective clients don’t understand mediation; and (ii) access to cases is controlled by lawyers or the courts.
