Teaching Negotiation Online: Part II – new resource available

As more and more teachers in the area of negotiation and dispute resolution consider taking their courses (or, parts of them) online, I’ve received many queries of the “How do you get started?” variety. And, I’m not the only one fielding these questions. I'd like to share a resource, addressing these questions.

Together with co –presenters and –authors Jennifer Parlamis (University of San Francisco), Roy Lewicki (Ohio State University) and…

Video-based mediation – it’s starting to happen. What do we need to know?

[Also featured at http://www.mediate.com//articles/Video_based_mediation.cfm]

----------

I recently had the pleasure of writing a paper with my student-turned-teacher, Jeff Thompson (an alumnus of our Negotiation and Dispute Resolution program at Creighton and the Wizard Behind the Curtain at ADRHub). Jeff works on non-verbal communication…

The Heart, Mind and Smartphone of the Negotiator

Negotiation via (the New) Email

Forget everything you think you know about negotiating, mediating and engaging with conflict via email. That's what I did.

Exactly three years ago, I finished work on a chapter for a negotiation textbook (Michael Benoliel’s Negotiation Excellence: Successful Deal Making). The chapter focused on negotiation via email, and described the challenges, pitfalls and benefits of working thought this…

Cyberweek 2013 - Online Dispute Resolution Conference Schedule

How do we know if they're dogs? Bryan Farkas' “Old problem, new medium: Deception in computer-facilitated negotiation and dispute resolution”

How can we assess with any accuracy whether someone is lying to us through online communication media? And - what can we do to prevent it? This article spotlights an issue that anybody practicing ODR needs to consider.

The concept of interparty trust has often been raised with regards to ODR. This topic has been a central discussion forum in Cyberweek for the past several years, and is the topic of many articles on ODR.

The perspective taken has usually…

Don't you wish you could click 'trust'?

Find it difficult to get people to trust you online? Email negotiations or conversations end up in flame wars? There are reasons, and solutions, for this.

I’ve uploaded my first paper on this subject at http://papers.ssrn.com/sol3/papers.cfm?abstract_id=1722065.   A few years have gone by, and the principles hold firm.

Looking forward to hearing your thoughts!

Good intentions and environmental tensions: Conflict management addresses The Green Question

As do all human activities, our attempts to respond to and engage with conflict have environmental impact. Any intervention – mediation, peacebuilding activities, training, workshops, and so forth – can be performed in different ways, some of which are inherently more environmentally adverse than others.

In a new article, entitled …

ODR Blog: ODR, by any other name… Part IV: Serious Fun

Around the holidays, we all promise ourselves things such as self-improvement and behavioral changing. For the past few years, I’ve been promising myself a simple promise: To find something fun, which I really enjoy doing – and to take it very seriously.

I haven’t been successful with this. And, I’m not too hard on myself – I really like my day job that much.  Still, my recurring failure does leave me envious of people who are dead serious about the things they do for…

ODR Blog: ODR, by any other name… Part 3

After a few months’ break, I’m back hunting the web for companies and service providers out there who are offering services which would be very familiar to ODR practitioners and researchers – but do so without making any mention of ODR, and beneath the radar of the ODR field in general. As earlier parts of this hunt have discussed, these…

ODR: Making the world a little greener, one case at a time

One of the best-kept secrets about ODR is how green it is. See Colleen Getz's latest blog, in which she writes:

"...Of course, a decision to use a distance mediation or other on-line dispute resolution service will be just one of many considerations in determining how best to get help with resolving your dispute. But, when weighing the pros and cons, it is important to know that the…

ODR Blog: ODR, by any other name… Join the hunt?

Out there in cyberspace, Online Dispute Resolution is being developed and practiced by people who have never attended Cyberweek, participated in the International Forum on ODR, or even heard of the term ODR. Their development of the tools and practices of ODR is at least as important as the development work being conducted by the dispute resolution world. ODRBlog is going to hunt these platforms and practitioners down and introduce them to the ODR…
