'Free' Coffee & Rapport Building

Rapport.

Rapport building is often cited as critical characteristic of a successful mediators. As a mediator, I agree, and think it must also be genuine. Additionally, establishing rapport, or building it, is something that mediators probably do and use not only as a tool in their Mediator's Toolbox but rather something they use throughout the day during daily interactions.
Now of course this is written for mediators, my usual audience, yet take out the word…

Let's Here It for Research! (Hip Hip...)

If anyone felt like asking me to talk (briefly) about my current research, this is what I would say (today at least):

The unique nature of mediation- mediators interpret and adapt the foundational elements to fit their unique style and practice as well as to each specific case makes it most appropriate for qualitative analysis to be used to study it.…

RE: What do you think about a conflicts resolution position being a mandatory part of a grievance process

I saw a posting on the Ombuds Blog about this and was curious about your take on it.

What do you think about the University of Louisville plans to integrate the Ombuds’ Office into their grievance process. They have broken down the type of grievance that is mandated to be heard informally by the Ombuds but they also said if a party refuses to utilize the Ombuds in their grievance process, he/she will be reported to the next higher level of…

Yes, and: Core Concerns, Internal Mindfulness, and External Mindfulness for Emotional Balance, Lie Detection, and Successful Negotiation

I just finished reading a paper by Clark Freshman in the Nevada Law Journal. I suggest you give it a read as well as the other papers which also look interesting (SYMPOSIUM: MINDFULNESS, EMOTIONS, AND ETHICS IN LAW AND DISPUTE RESOLUTION) but I have yet to get a chance to read them.

Below I have highlighted some sections which stood out for me:

Not Facing Someone Makes Them Comfortable???

I went the other day to an espresso bar (yes, I am a full-on coffee/espresso snob now!) and noticed something that I had to blog on. Being the massive observer of body language and nonverbal communication that I claim to be, I noticed the two people next to me.
They were both seated next to me, and I was standing at a high table drinking my…

Mindfulness & Body Language

Greetings from the 'Land Down Under'!

While traveling in Australia, primarily for holidays, those who know me know I always manage to do some work too! With that said, last week I gave a talk at Southern Cross University's Lismore campus which was also broadcasted to two other campuses (hooray for technology!).

The topic was on basic nonverbal verbal communication- how to use it properly and also how to identify certain gestures used by others. I will not go into the… Continue

Images for conflict trainers

I hope this is the right forum to bring up this topic and inspire some exchange. I am a person who likes to utilize power point when I do workshops in conflict resolution, at least to keep me speaking in a linear manner. Many times the slides are simply images to help represent the concept I am covering. I like to go around and update my image library from time to time, but thought it would be helpful to get an exchange on a forum like this.

So what types of images do you like to… Continue
