Conflict Emergency Kit

The Olive Branch Blog- So ... it's happened. You are being drawn into a conflict. Things

are going downhill and you can see the pattern - attack and counterattack. You don't want to go there. What can you do???

I found these suggestions in a book entitled "The Seven Challenges Workbook" which is a guide to cooperative communication skills. They are great to practice when you are in a conflict 'emergency.'

  1. Calm yourself down - Take a deep breath and close your eyes for a moment. Imagine a more peaceful time - perhaps doing something you really enjoy.
  2. Think about what you really need - Conflict can distract you from your own goals because you focus on the other person's mistakes, blunders, attacks etc. rather than on negotiating the issues that really matter to you.
  3. Imagine the other person as an...

Elizabeth Clemants- As a mediation trainer for fifteen years, I must have had these words come out of my mouth thousands of times: Don’t try to fix it for them. As anyone that trains mediators knows, problem solving is such a hard habit to break when you are first starting out. You listen intently to what the parties have to say and the predicament that they find themselves in and when you finally get a chance to speak, the first thing you think to say is the “solution” to their problem. Print edition

The print edition of The Conflict Pivot is now available on Amazon and Amazon Europe. The Kindle version will be available at the end of June. Over the next few days I’ll be telling you about prize drawings you can enter using your purchase receipt…

By Lynne Kinnucan
Linda Colburn was nicknamed the Red Adair of community crisis intervention for her willingness to intervene in on-scene disruptions and for her unique strategies in pushing them through to resolution. In a telephone interview from Hawaii, she walked us through how talk works, whether it’s when she’s called to a breaking crisis or when she’s slogging through a year-long facilitation with multiple angry stakeholders.
The situations are different, but her emphasis is always the same: helping people make choices about how they engage and how they will handle future conflicts. And then she designs processes that will elevate their skill sets going forward. This transformative emphasis, she says, is critical for people who have to coexist after their disputes have been settled.

Here is Linda on one of her transformative devices: Provocative Dissonance.
