Karen Hollett- But here is something else to thing about on a broader scale. There is also evidence that exposure to nature can also reduce the incidence of violent and aggressive behaviours. A study by Kuo and Sullivan looked at the effects of nearby nature on the incidence of psychological and physical (classified as both mild and severe) violence in inner city neighbourhoods. Their study provides strong evidence that we can now add reducing the incidence of interpersonal aggression and violence to the already known benefits of nature. According to the researchers...

Navigating the Rise of Sunni-Shia Violent Sectarianism

A recent PEW Research Center report examined polls conducted between November 2011 and May 2012. It found that 52 percent of Muslims polled in Iraq, 44 percent in Afghanistan and 67 percent in Lebanon said Sunni-Shia tensions are a “very big or moderately big” problem in their country. The re-escalation of violence in Iraq this year likely would have increased the concern there if the polling were conducted today.

An August 2012 analysis by CQ Global Researcher suggests that sectarianism among Muslims occurs mainly as a result of mistrust. It’s not surprising that, in midst of conflict, revolutions, and fragile and crisis environments, human beings turn inward out of survival, to protect their core identities.

...For example, in Iraq, Afghanistan, Pakistan, the Philippines, Indonesia, Nigeria, and Sudan, USIP has encouraged strategic dialogues by increasing the conflict-management skills of religious leaders.

Cinnie Noble- Getting off on the wrong foot refers to those situations that sometimes happen during first encounters with others. This may be at the beginning of a relationship, project, discussion, or any other interaction, when we find ourselves off to an unproductive or uncomfortable start. Something may have happened in our interactions to create these experiences or we pick up something that is off-putting. Someone else may have gossiped to us about the person and their negative views stuck with us. Often though, there is not a clear reason for what seems to have led to disconnection and, at times, even animosity.
