Your Stress Is Contagious

Jeff Thompson- Mediators, coaches, negotiators, and ombuds- your verbal and nonverbal actions are contagious.  As "guides" in assisting people involved in conflicts and disputes, you can help or hinder them on their journey.

Sometimes your actions and words spoken are purposely done, yet other times unknowingly you "leak" out anxiety, stress, and discomfort.
A recent study demonstrates how your stress can be contagious.

Cinnie Noble- One of the ways that some people manage conflict is by using the ‘silent treatment’. This expression refers to “Maintenance of aloof silence toward another as an expression of one’s anger or disapproval”. The same source says this phrase is “a deliberate discourteous act”.

There may be a number of reasons for using the silent treatment – and some intentions may be like those for letting the other person “stew in her or his own juices”. Here are some possible reasons...

My Story: Janice Etter

Julie Macfarlane- When Janice Etter filed a claim in small claims court in November 2009, she never imagined what awaited her. When she found herself and her partner the victim of a scam. Janice brought her lawsuit to try to recover money she had lost to a con-artist, thinking that in the “people’s court” (small claims) she would not need to pay for legal counsel – “we never dreamt we would need one for this”.
