Getting to Yes Exercise: A Trisolan Map

Once you have finished reading the assigned material from Getting to Yes, conduct the 'A Trisolan Map' exercise.

This exercise is designed to help you make the jump from understanding the innovative method you have learned to actually applying it - before you engage in negotiation simulations or in any real-life negotiations you have going on in your life right now.

This exercise has the benefits of being ungraded, and a solo activity (as opposed to the…

Conflict resolution and mediation for African Diaspora

I am thankful for Dr CJ Larkin and Dr Pam DeVove who organized ethnic mediation council of St Louis MO that has been helping many conflicts resolved in our ethnic communities. The integration of traditional and modern concepts of conflict resolution works best because people are very familiar and open if they approach for any issues based on the culture they know. Conflict is natural and it even exists with in one person as there is a saying in my native Ethiopian, "my left leg some times…

Event at Creighton University: #BlackLivesMatter, #MeToo, and More - Standing up for Justice at CU (March 1st, 2018)

Movements like #BlackLivesMatter and #MeToo continue to garner media attention throughout the world and have shaken our moral fiber. What makes people tap into their moral courage and inner strength to stand up for social injustice, inequity, and abuse? What is our social responsibility as members of a Jesuit university to speak up in constructive ways?

This panel…

Build your negotiation counterpart a bridge to your side through use of Social Intuition

We’ve long known that to be a successful negotiator , it isn't enough to come up with a good offer. Great negotiators are able to engage their counterpart’s attitudes, emotions, and thinking patterns. Some of this has been captured in discussions of ‘empathy’ and ‘emotional intelligence,’ but much of it remains ineffable. Yup - it's vague enough, to require a vague word to describe it.…

In Rod We Trust: Politics, Talking Sticks, and the Ongoing Crisis in Conflict Resolution

When I heard the reports last week of senators, meeting in a bipartisan effort to open the government, using a talking stick, my first thought was ‘that’s cute’. My second response was a sense of disquiet, which I didn’t know to pin down. It has nothing to do with the method itself – I’ve used talking objects myself; in fact, I’ve used them in working…

Applications Open for the Inaugural DC Symposium on the New Frontiers of Peacebuilding!

This summer, IPSI and American University’s School of International Service (SIS) are cooperating on a very special program: the inaugural DC Symposium on the New Frontiers of Peacebuilding, which  will be held from July 14th – August 4th, 2018.

The occurrence and intensity of existing threats to peace urge us to look for creative answers to face those challenges. The 2018 DC Symposium will expose its participants to the fundamental concepts and practices of…

Negotiating via Text Messaging

We all negotiate via text messaging.

Perhaps, for some, this only occurs on the fringes of negotiation: a request to move the venue of a meeting, or to correct a typo on a contract. Others may recognize that they have negotiated the sale of a car or a house, elements of a job offer, or even professional negotiations through this medium. Certainly, many of the family-and-friends -related interactions that texts on negotiations use as examples are now conducted via text.

One…

LABOR DISPUTE RESOLUTION: EEOC [USA] & CCMA [SA] - A COMPARATIVE ANALYSIS

“Once upon a time, men arguably wiser and more sensible than those of the present era settled their disputes by sitting down together in a civilised fashion and talking until the problem was solved. No courts, no judges, no longwinded wrangling over technicalities; just a chat by the fireside, overseen by a…

DISCRIMINATION: DISABILITY – PSYCHIATRIC ILLNESS OR PSYCHOLOGICAL DISABILITY OR IMPAIRMENT – EMPLOYMENT EQUITY ACT, ACT 55 OF 1998 (AS AMENDED)

“The appellant, however, sought to justify its decision to require the respondent to submit to psychiatric testing on the basis that she had consented to it in her contract of employment; that it had concerns about her behaviour; and that the work performed by her was inherently stressful and demanded that she be “of sound body and mind to adequately…
