Using Semiotics With Conflict Resolution

Below is my newest article on semiotics and nonverbal communication.  Of course the 'spin' from the mediation and the conflict resolution perspective is, in order to be effective at helping and guiding parties who are involved in conflicts and disputes, we must be cognitive of all the elements that exist.

Using, for example the wheel (or circle) of conflict helps you as the…

'Zero Tolerance' of bullies? Hungary's schools offer an alternative response to conflict management

As school boards, state and local governments draft legislation to respond to increased reports of bullying, the term “zero tolerance” often comes up. When New Jersey recently implemented its sweeping “Anti-Bullying Bill of Rights,” the “zero tolerance” formula appeared in several news reports.

I posed a question to a restorative justice…

Beyond Fight or Flight - Making Different Choices to How We Approach Conflict

You've heard it before...instinctively, when anyone feels threatened our brain kicks into gear with a fight or flight response. We either stand up and fight to protect ourselves, or we run away from the threat. It is biologically part of who we are as humans. There are other choices we can make when we feel threatened in a confrontation. Choices and different behavioral… Continue

"What Gives Conflict A Bad Name?"

Differences and disagreements – we deal with them all the time. They are conflicts, though we don’t bother to label them as such. We listen and consider, we build solutions, we problem solve, and then we move on. Other times, something snaps – and we suddenly find ourselves standing in the middle of an ugly mess, arguing perhaps, or getting out of the room as quickly as possible. In… Continue

Back to School Series - Texas Conflict Coach

August is a time for many families preparing their kids back to school. We see ads on t.v., jingles and segments on morning shows for Back to School preparedness usually about fashion, supplies, etc. But what about preparing kids, parents and teachers for managing the challenges, issues and potential conflict that can be encountered every day in school.

Conflict Resolution Impact

Sometimes it is easy to have tunnel-vision when it comes to conflict resolution curriculum. Every student, professor, practitioner, etc. has very different concepts of how they want to focus their skills. For example, I am currently a law student; therefore, my ADR coursework has been geared toward supplementing my legal skills - improving interpersonal skills, negotiation techniques, communication, transparency, etc. However, many of my other classmates or professors have focus on improving…

Can Motivation Resolve Conflicts in Businesses?

This week I watched an interesting TED talk about extrinsic and intrinsic motivation. And it made me wonder if this could help conflict resolution in businesses. [As a side note, TED is an outlet that posts talks on a variety of topics. I have yet to find one that isn't incredibly interesting and practical. If you haven't checked it out, you should - www.ted.com]. I've posted the talk below, and I highly recommend you watch at least the first…

An Interesting Settlement

OK, I love art. I think it should be conserved, supported, used, observed, etc. So when stories pop up about museums deaccessioning pieces (i.e. selling off pieces in their collections), it's concerning. What if the object disappears into a private collection never to be seen again? What if the buyer sticks it in storage? Loses it? Rips it? Lets dust settle into the centuries-old paint? Obviously, the chances of this happening are slim, but I tend to be one of those worse-case-scenario type…
